Kassel 08.09.2020 – The IT security company NetKnights releases version 3.4 of its
professional multi-factor authentication software privacyIDEA. With the new release,
the open source provider offers companies new flexible authentication mechanisms
and means for very special requirements and usage scenarios. Among other things,
users have more freedom in designing authentication workflows and using their own
token types. Other features of privacyIDEA 3.4 include a new dashboard for a better
overview of the system and an enhanced push token that makes the software
independent of the availability of the Google Push Service and Apple Notification Service.
The new version 3.4 of privacyIDEA is now available via the Python Package Index
and in the Community Repositories for Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04. Additionally NetKnights
offers an Enterprise Edition with support for Ubuntu LTS and RHEL/CentOS and performs
custom development for special requirements.
More flexibility for the infrastructure
The new "Multi-Challenge-Response" feature allows administrators to make authentication
workflows more flexible. In doing so, privacyIDEA can prompt the user for further
input not only once, but several times. This allows, for example, a token PIN to be
reset directly during the logon process. The function can also be used for modifying the
authentication workflows.
Because the development of company-owned solutions is common in the professional environment,
the developers have made the interface of the token classes more accessible.
Users can now extend privacyIDEA with their own token types without having to modify the
core code. This allows completely new authentication methods to be implemented in a project,
completely independent of the release cycle of privacyIDEA.
In addition to the usual HTTP gateways, the administrator can now also use his own
scripts for sending SMS, so that privacyIDEA can notify users via any gateway and service provider.
Previously, the multi-factor authentication software could read user information from LDAP
directories, SQL databases or files. Thanks to a development from the privacyIDEA community,
this is now also possible from any web services in JSON format.
More overview for the administrator
The new dashboard gives the administrator a better overview of the system.
For example, it provides information about the number of available hardware tokens
and contains quick links to the policies and information about the run time of the
loaded licenses. The developers have gathered useful information in this first
version and hope to receive feedback from users on how the dashboard can be further expanded.
More stability for push tokens
In view of an upcoming update of the privacyIDEA Authenticator app, the new release
of privacyIDEA provides polling for push tokens. This will enable the Authenticator app
to actively request push notifications from the server. This makes privacyIDEA independent
of the availability of Google Push Service and Apple Notification Service.

leadership of NetKnights GmbH as open source software under AGPLv3.
